Callouts – My Favorite Block

Let’s talk about Callouts, my favorite type of block. There are many advanced block types in Notion, and we’ll talk all about them later in this course. But this rather simple, pretty straightforward type of block, is actually my favorite. That’s because it’s so versatile, and it elevates the basic experience in Notion so much.

What is a Callout block? A callout block is a simple text block with an additional emphasis put on it. You can create a callout block just by typing /callout. This emphasis is represented with a colored background around the block. Each callout block also has an additional icon similar to page icons that you can add for a little bit extra emphasis. You can also keep your callout block with the default background, and that will simply add a little border around it while keeping the background color same as the page.

We use callout blocks a lot in our Notion Workspace, both to put emphasis on important bits of text, as well as add caution, or comments.

But here’s the best part about callout blocks — You can put pretty much all other blocks inside of a callout block! This means that we can add lists, toggles, images, and pretty much anything else to callout block, making them so much more useful.

When pressing return, you won’t exit the callout block, which means that you can keep typing either multiple paragraphs of text, or add different types of blocks inside the callout.

Here’s an example from our internal documentation, where we use callout blocks to both mention add caution, as well as highlight important features:

Callouts are absolutely great, and I hope you fall in love with them as much as I did. But now, it’s time to move on to toggles.
